Zong Launches Z Wallet With Zindigi After PayMax Exit From Fintech Market

Zong has returned to Pakistan’s digital payments market with the launch of Z Wallet, a digital wallet integrated directly into the My Zong App through a partnership with Zindigi, the digital financial services platform powered by JS Bank. The move marks a significant shift from Zong’s earlier attempt to operate its own electronic money business through PayMax and instead uses an embedded finance model to bring banking services to its existing customer base.

The new Z Wallet is powered by Zindigi’s Banking-as-a-Service infrastructure, allowing regulated financial services to be embedded within the My Zong App. The application has more than 22 million monthly active users, giving the wallet access to a large existing digital audience without requiring customers to download a separate banking application. The model allows Zong to provide financial services through its platform while Zindigi and JS Bank provide the underlying regulated banking infrastructure.

Z Wallet currently supports interbank fund transfers through Raast, utility and internet bill payments and mobile top-ups. Zindigi also plans to expand the wallet with additional services, including nano lending, a dedicated Z-Debit Card and specialised connectivity bundles. Before the full launch, the service had already onboarded thousands of verified users and processed thousands of transactions, indicating early interest in financial services integrated directly into the telecom experience.

The launch also comes nearly three years after Zong exited its previous fintech venture. Zong surrendered its Electronic Money Institution licence in October 2023 and discontinued PayMax operations. While the earlier model required Zong to operate within the regulatory and capital requirements associated with an EMI, the new arrangement allows the telecom company to offer financial services through Zindigi’s regulated banking infrastructure.

Z Wallet enters a competitive digital payments market that includes established wallets and emerging fintech platforms. Its key differentiation is the embedded banking approach, placing financial services inside an application already used by millions of telecom customers. The partnership between Zong and Zindigi reflects the broader growth of embedded finance in Pakistan, where banking and payment capabilities are increasingly being integrated into non-banking digital platforms.
