FonGreen Silicon Technologies (FoST), the official zone developer of the Foundation Renewable & Technology Zone (FRTZ) in Karachi, has partnered with Wateen Telecom to deploy fiber-based connectivity and AI-powered surveillance infrastructure across the technology zone. Under the agreement, Wateen Telecom will design, deploy, operate and maintain a Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) throughout the FoST zone, while also installing an integrated CCTV and AI Vision Analytics solution at the premises. The partnership brings together FRTZ’s focus on renewable energy manufacturing and emerging technologies with Wateen’s telecommunications and digital infrastructure capabilities. The agreement was signed by representatives of both organisations, marking the start of the planned connectivity and surveillance deployment at the zone.
The GPON deployment will provide fiber-based connectivity across the FRTZ site, creating the network infrastructure required to support businesses and technology-related operations within the zone. Wateen will be responsible for the design, deployment, operation and maintenance of the network under the agreement. GPON technology uses fiber-optic infrastructure to distribute high-speed connectivity from a central network point to multiple users and locations, making it suitable for environments where several enterprises and facilities require reliable network access. Wateen has described itself as a telecommunications and ICT solutions provider with a focus on fiber network infrastructure and enterprise digital solutions. Its role in FRTZ will therefore extend beyond basic connectivity to the operation and continued maintenance of the deployed infrastructure.
Alongside the network deployment, Wateen will supply, install, integrate and commission a CCTV system supported by AI-based Vision Analytics. The solution is intended to combine conventional video surveillance with artificial intelligence-based video analysis, providing FRTZ with technology-supported monitoring capabilities. Wateen will also provide round-the-clock monitoring, maintenance and technical support for the duration of the agreement. The integration of connectivity and surveillance infrastructure means that the same technology deployment will cover both the network requirements of the zone and its security-monitoring needs. AI-based video analytics can be used to analyse camera feeds and identify defined events or activity, although the specific analytics capabilities and operational parameters of the FRTZ system were not detailed in the announcement.
FoST is developing FRTZ as a hub focused on renewable energy manufacturing and emerging technologies in Karachi. The company said the zone is intended to provide an environment where renewable energy and technology-related businesses can develop industrial and commercial operations. FonGreen Silicon Technologies’ CEO and Managing Director said the connectivity and intelligent security infrastructure provided through the partnership would support the development of the zone. Wateen CEO Adil Rashid also said the company would bring its connectivity experience together with AI technologies through the partnership. With GPON connectivity, AI-enabled surveillance, continuous monitoring and technical support included in the agreement, the project represents a technology infrastructure component of FRTZ’s wider development.
