The digital transformation of Pakistan’s pharmaceutical trade reached a new milestone as Aftab Haider, Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Single Window, conducted a high-level visit to the headquarters of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan. Invited by the CEO of DRAP, the visit served as a strategic review of the progress and impact generated by the DRAP–PSW Clearance Gateway. This collaborative platform has become a cornerstone of the national effort to modernize regulatory oversight and trade facilitation, specifically targeting the complex requirements of the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. The meeting underscored the vital role of institutional collaboration in creating a paperless environment that supports the ease of doing business while maintaining stringent safety standards.
During the session, leadership from both organizations analyzed how the digital integration between DRAP’s regulatory systems and the PSW platform has fundamentally altered the processing of pharmaceutical consignments. By eliminating the manual duplication of data and enabling real-time verification, the gateway has successfully transitioned the industry away from cumbersome paper-based workflows. One of the most significant shifts highlighted was the move from post-import to pre-import regulatory processing, a change that has drastically reduced dwell times at ports. This proactive approach ensures that compliance is verified before goods arrive, allowing for a seamless flow of essential medicines and medical devices into the country.
The performance metrics shared during the visit illustrate the scale of this digital overhaul, with over 27,000 import licenses and 63,000 import permits processed through the gateway to date. Thousands of regulatory approvals that previously required physical documentation are now delivered via secure digital platforms. The impact on operational speed is evident in the average clearance times, with drug import clearances now taking approximately 1.61 days, import licenses averaging 1.97 days, and export permits being processed in just 1.26 days. These gains in efficiency provide a competitive edge to the pharmaceutical industry, allowing businesses to manage their supply chains with greater predictability and lower administrative costs.
A key highlight of the collaboration is the successful transition of export certification services onto the DRAP–PSW Gateway. This includes the digitization of critical documents such as the Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product, Free Sale Certificates, Good Manufacturing Practice Certificates, and Export No Objection Certificates. By simplifying the documentation required for international trade, the gateway has strengthened the global standing of Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports. These digital certificates, which are often embedded with QR codes for instant international verification, ensure that Pakistani products meet global regulatory standards with transparency and trust, directly supporting the country’s export-led economic goals.
The leadership of both DRAP and PSW reaffirmed their commitment to deepening system integration and exploring future digital initiatives. The roadmap includes enhanced data sharing to further secure the pharmaceutical supply chain against counterfeit products and to provide better visibility for all stakeholders. DRAP officials expressed their appreciation for the continued technical and operational support provided by the PSW team, noting that these reforms serve as a model for other regulatory bodies in Pakistan. The partnership demonstrates how technology can be leveraged to harmonize diverse regulatory requirements into a single, user-friendly interface.
Looking forward, the success of the DRAP–PSW Clearance Gateway is expected to catalyze further innovations in the digital trade ecosystem. As more services are added to the platform, the goal remains to build a fully integrated, transparent, and efficient trade environment that empowers local manufacturers and importers alike. This landmark collaboration between a major regulator and a national digital service provider sets a high standard for public sector reforms, proving that digital-first strategies are essential for the modernization of Pakistan’s trade infrastructure and its integration into the global digital economy.
