PIDE Calls for Trust Accountability in Pakistan AI Fintech Future

The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) has called for greater focus on trust and accountability as Pakistan moves toward a future increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI) and financial technology. The discussion highlights the growing role of AI in financial services and the need to ensure that technological progress is accompanied by appropriate governance, transparency and accountability. As financial institutions and fintech companies increasingly explore AI-based systems, questions around responsible implementation and public trust are becoming more important to the development of the country’s digital finance ecosystem.

AI is increasingly being incorporated into financial services for applications such as customer support, fraud detection, credit assessment, risk management and automated decision-making. These technologies can allow financial institutions and fintech companies to process large volumes of information and deliver services more efficiently. However, the increased use of automated systems also creates questions about how decisions are made, how customer information is handled and who remains accountable when AI-driven systems produce inaccurate or inappropriate outcomes. These considerations make trust an important factor in the adoption of AI across financial services.

For Pakistan’s fintech sector, responsible AI adoption is particularly relevant as digital financial services continue to expand. Fintech platforms and financial institutions are using technology to reach customers, introduce digital products and improve access to financial services. AI can support these developments by enabling more automated and data-driven processes, but the benefits depend on systems being developed and deployed with appropriate safeguards. Clear accountability can help customers understand how technology affects their financial interactions while giving institutions a framework for addressing risks associated with automated decision-making.

The focus on trust also extends to the wider digital ecosystem, where consumers increasingly interact with technology-based financial platforms. Issues involving data security, privacy, transparency and fairness can influence whether customers are willing to adopt new digital financial services. For AI-based financial products, maintaining confidence may require institutions to establish clear internal controls and ensure that automated systems are monitored appropriately. Regulatory and institutional frameworks can also play a role in setting expectations around responsible AI use and ensuring that technological innovation does not come at the expense of customer protections.

PIDE’s position comes as Pakistan continues to explore the potential of AI and fintech to contribute to economic and financial development. The country’s digital finance ecosystem is evolving through the introduction of new technologies, financial platforms and data-driven services, creating opportunities for greater efficiency and access. At the same time, the development of this ecosystem requires attention to governance and accountability so that emerging technologies can be adopted in a manner that supports public confidence. As AI becomes more integrated into Pakistan’s financial sector, balancing innovation with trust, transparency and responsible governance will remain an important consideration for institutions, businesses and policymakers.
