The government of Pakistan has stated that the country’s export growth potential can be significantly unlocked through a combined focus on skills development, e-commerce integration, and the gradual formalization of the economy. Officials emphasized that sustainable export expansion will require not only improving production capacity but also ensuring that compliant businesses operate on a level playing field supported by modern digital trade systems.
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan highlighted that Pakistan holds strong potential for export-led growth, particularly in key sectors such as textiles, leather, and value-added recycled products. He noted that linking domestic talent and industrial capacity with global markets is essential for long-term economic progress. According to him, policy support and digital platforms, especially e-commerce channels, will play a central role in connecting local producers with international buyers.
The minister shared these views during a meeting with a delegation of business leaders and development practitioners led by Taimur Siddique, Director of Shahi Group. The meeting also included Nawabzada Mir Muhammad Zarain Khan Magsi, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism and Culture in Balochistan, along with representatives from textile, leather, and broader trade sectors. Discussions focused on strengthening Pakistan’s export ecosystem through coordinated efforts between the public and private sectors.
Jam Kamal Khan pointed out Karachi’s strategic advantages in supporting export growth, including its port connectivity, skilled labor force, and established industrial infrastructure. He stressed that while training programs and vocational initiatives are important, they must be directly connected to market access in order to create meaningful economic outcomes. He further emphasized that e-commerce platforms can help bridge this gap by enabling businesses from even remote regions to reach international markets.
Participants of the meeting highlighted several grassroots initiatives, particularly vocational and stitching training centers in Balochistan. These centers are helping young women produce export-quality goods, allowing them to generate income and contribute to household economies. Such initiatives were cited as examples of how skills development can directly translate into economic empowerment when aligned with market opportunities. The discussion also explored modern branding strategies, including storytelling-based marketing approaches that connect products with social impact narratives. These narratives often highlight themes such as community development, women empowerment, and local craftsmanship, which can significantly enhance the global appeal of Pakistani products in competitive markets.
The Commerce Minister also noted that traditional industries such as carpet weaving and handicrafts can be revitalized through digital platforms. He stated that e-commerce provides an opportunity to scale these sectors sustainably by giving artisans and small producers direct access to consumers worldwide, reducing dependency on intermediaries and improving profit margins. On the policy side, Jam Kamal Khan reiterated the government’s commitment to improving ease of doing business. This includes rationalizing export-related charges, streamlining regulatory processes, and addressing tax refund delays that often impact exporters’ liquidity. These reforms are aimed at creating a more efficient and investor-friendly business environment.
He also addressed the challenges posed by the informal sector, noting that undocumented businesses create unfair competition for compliant enterprises. Strengthening documentation, enforcement, and regulatory compliance, he said, would improve competitiveness and help attract both domestic and foreign investment. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen public-private collaboration, expand digital trade ecosystems, and create a more enabling environment for entrepreneurs and exporters across Pakistan.
