The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) conducted an Investor Awareness Session for finance students at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi, focusing on the role of the stock market, investment fundamentals and capital-market operations in Pakistan. The session was designed to provide students with practical information about investing and introduce them to the mechanisms through which investors can participate in the capital market. During the session, participants were briefed on the rationale behind investing, the process of trading securities and the role played by PSX within Pakistan’s financial system. Students were also introduced to digital resources available through the PSX website and Data Portal, giving them an opportunity to understand how market information can be accessed and used when researching investments. The initiative forms part of investor-awareness and financial-literacy efforts aimed at providing students and prospective investors with greater familiarity with capital-market processes.
A key component of the session was an introduction to PSX’s My Portfolio virtual trading platform, which allows users to gain experience through simulated trading rather than placing actual investment orders. Finance students were able to explore the platform and gain practical exposure to the process of tracking and managing a simulated portfolio. Such tools can provide students with an opportunity to understand basic market concepts, observe how securities can be monitored and become familiar with portfolio-management processes before entering the actual market. The session also covered the use of PSX’s website and Data Portal, which provide market-related information and data for users. By combining educational discussion with practical exposure to digital market resources, the session gave participants an overview of different stages of an investment journey, from understanding the capital market and researching information to monitoring investments and learning how trades are executed.
Jawad Bhatti, Chief Operating Officer at BMA Capital Management Ltd., also participated in the session and shared insights with the students about investing and the capital market. His involvement provided participants with an industry perspective alongside the information presented by PSX. Students were guided on how they could begin learning about investment and develop a better understanding of capital-market operations. The discussion also addressed investment strategies and questions related to participating in the stock market. The session concluded with a question-and-answer segment in which students actively engaged with the speakers and raised questions about investment strategies and capital-market activities. The interaction provided an opportunity for participants to clarify concepts discussed during the session and explore practical considerations associated with investing. Such engagement is particularly relevant for finance students who may later pursue careers in banking, investment management, brokerage, financial analysis or other areas connected with Pakistan’s capital markets.
The PSX-IBA session highlights the role of financial education in increasing awareness of formal investment channels among young people. Exposure to stock-market concepts during university can help students understand how capital markets function and how market information is used when making investment decisions. The use of simulated trading through My Portfolio also provides an educational environment where participants can explore portfolio management without directly committing funds to market transactions. PSX’s investor-awareness activities also provide a connection between academic learning and practical financial-market knowledge by bringing students into direct contact with market institutions and industry professionals. For finance students at IBA Karachi, the session offered exposure to the workings of Pakistan’s capital market, PSX’s digital resources and the broader process of investing. The exchange between students and professionals also created an opportunity to discuss investment strategies and market operations in a practical setting, supporting broader financial-literacy efforts among university students.
