HBL Microfinance Bank Limited (HBL MfB) has officially launched its Islamic Banking operations in Pakistan, inaugurating its first dedicated Islamic Banking branch in Timergara, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The launch follows the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) approval of an Islamic Banking licence, allowing the bank to begin offering financial services structured around Shariah principles. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Amir Khan, President and Chief Executive Officer of HBL Microfinance Bank, along with members of the bank’s senior management team and representatives of the local community. The opening marks the beginning of a new banking segment for the institution, which has traditionally focused on providing microfinance services to individuals and underserved communities. Through its Islamic Banking operations, the bank intends to offer customers an additional option for accessing formal financial services while following their preferred religious and financial principles. The Timergara branch is the first outlet under this newly launched operation, with the bank indicating that it plans to expand its Islamic Banking presence further.
The new Islamic Banking services are intended for individuals, micro-entrepreneurs, farmers and communities seeking Shariah-compliant financial solutions. These customer groups form an important part of Pakistan’s microfinance sector, where access to suitable savings and financing options can support household needs, small businesses and agricultural activities. Islamic financial products are structured according to Shariah requirements, with their contracts and operational arrangements subject to the relevant Islamic banking framework and oversight. For customers who avoid conventional interest-based banking, the availability of Islamic microfinance services can provide another route into the regulated financial system. The launch in Timergara gives the bank a physical presence for customers in the area who prefer to access banking services through a dedicated branch. However, HBL Microfinance Bank has not yet disclosed a detailed list of products, financing limits, deposit rates, fees or eligibility requirements specifically associated with the new branch. Customers will need to contact the bank or visit the outlet for information about the products currently available and the requirements for opening accounts or applying for financing.
Speaking on the occasion, Amir Khan said the launch of the Islamic Banking branch marked an important milestone in the bank’s efforts to make financial services more accessible and responsive to the needs of communities across Pakistan. He described the Timergara outlet as a step towards bringing banking services closer to people who need them, particularly customers who prefer financial solutions aligned with Islamic principles. Established in 2002, HBL Microfinance Bank has developed its operations around serving individuals and communities that may have limited access to conventional banking services. The introduction of Islamic Banking extends this focus by giving customers another choice in how they manage their financial needs. Micro-entrepreneurs may require financing for business activities, while farmers can seek financial support for agricultural requirements and households may look for suitable deposit and other banking services. The bank’s announcement presents the new operation as an extension of its existing financial inclusion efforts, although it does not provide specific targets for the number of customers, accounts or financing facilities expected through the Islamic Banking branch.
The inauguration also comes as Pakistan’s financial sector continues to develop Islamic banking services across different categories of financial institutions. The State Bank of Pakistan has issued instructions covering Islamic Banking operations and windows for microfinance banks, providing a regulatory framework for institutions seeking to offer Shariah-compliant services. HBL Microfinance Bank’s new branch adds another option within this developing segment, particularly for customers in Timergara and surrounding communities. The bank has said that it intends to scale its Islamic Banking operations and bring these services to more areas across the country, but it has not announced a timetable or confirmed locations for additional branches. The pace of expansion will depend on the bank’s operational plans, regulatory requirements and demand for Islamic financial products in different markets. For now, the Timergara inauguration marks the start of HBL Microfinance Bank’s dedicated Islamic Banking operations and provides individuals, farmers and small businesses in the area with another channel to explore Shariah-compliant financial services.
