Central Bank Launches Direct Bank Transfers for BISP Beneficiaries

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is revolutionizing the way social welfare payments are distributed in the country. They’ve introduced a new framework that allows for direct crediting of financial assistance to beneficiaries enrolled in the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) directly into their bank accounts.

Developed collaboratively with BISP and various banks, this framework simplifies enrollment for beneficiaries. They can now receive social welfare payments through newly opened accounts accessible nationwide across all banks and Microfinance Banks (MFBs).

To ensure ease of access, BISP has already mapped beneficiaries to bank branches near their residences. However, due to the large number of beneficiaries (approximately 9.3 million), the program will be rolled out in phases. Initially, a pilot program targeting 300,000 beneficiaries will be conducted in Karachi and Lahore. Upon successful implementation, the framework will be progressively expanded to other cities.

The SBP expects this initiative to yield several benefits. Direct bank transfers are expected to streamline the disbursement process, making it more efficient and transparent. By encouraging BISP beneficiaries, particularly women, to open bank accounts, the program aims to promote greater financial inclusion for this demographic. Additionally, the initiative is expected to contribute to the overall digitalization of financial services in Pakistan.

This innovative framework by the SBP signifies a significant step towards improving social welfare delivery and promoting financial inclusion in Pakistan.
