SMEDA And Alibaba.com Introduce E-Commerce Programme To Help Pakistani SMEs Access International Markets

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has announced a strategic cooperation agreement with Alibaba.com to help Pakistani small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access international markets through digital commerce. The initiative, promoted under the SME E-Commerce Development Programme, aims to support businesses seeking to expand beyond domestic markets and connect with buyers across borders. The programme focuses on using Alibaba.com’s digital business-to-business (B2B) platform to introduce Pakistani enterprises to international trade opportunities. According to the announcement, the initiative has an enterprise pipeline of 50,000 businesses, with a target of training 10,000 SMEs and onboarding 2,000 businesses onto Alibaba.com. The collaboration is designed to address the practical requirements of businesses interested in digital exports, including training, platform access and assistance with online onboarding.

The programme will offer training sessions, workshops and roadshows to help participating businesses understand digital commerce and the process of reaching international buyers. It will also provide digital onboarding and facilitation for SMEs joining Alibaba.com, helping them establish their presence on the platform. Another feature is preferential pricing for eligible businesses using Alibaba.com services. These measures are intended to make digital trade more accessible to enterprises that may have limited experience with international B2B marketplaces. By combining capacity-building activities with platform-based business opportunities, SMEDA and Alibaba.com are seeking to create a pathway for local companies to present their products to overseas buyers. The announcement also identifies global B2B opportunities as a central component of the programme, giving participating businesses a route to explore potential commercial connections beyond Pakistan.

Financial assistance is another component of the initiative. The promotional material states that eligible businesses may receive a SMEDA grant of up to PKR 150,000, equivalent to approximately $500. The grant is subject to eligibility and applicable procedures, meaning that businesses will need to meet the programme’s requirements before receiving support. The initiative has identified textiles, sports goods, agricultural machinery and auto parts as focus sectors. These industries represent the types of businesses the programme intends to bring into digital trade channels, although the announcement does not provide a detailed breakdown of sector-wise targets or the selection process. The combination of training, onboarding assistance, preferential platform pricing and grant support is intended to help SMEs address some of the initial requirements involved in developing an online presence for international trade.

Interested businesses can register through SMEDA’s dedicated programme portal at smerp.smeda.org. The announcement encourages Pakistani enterprises to explore the opportunity as part of their efforts to reach buyers in international markets. For SMEs, participation could provide access to structured training and a recognised B2B marketplace, while the onboarding component is intended to help businesses establish their digital presence. However, the advertised targets of 50,000 enterprises in the pipeline, 10,000 businesses to be trained and 2,000 to be onboarded represent programme figures rather than confirmed completed outcomes. Businesses considering registration should review the eligibility conditions and applicable procedures, particularly those related to the financial grant. Through this cooperation, SMEDA and Alibaba.com are seeking to expand the participation of Pakistani SMEs in cross-border digital commerce and provide local businesses with additional channels to explore international demand.
