SECP Targets 2.5 Million Investors with Nationwide Financial Literacy Drive

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan is launching a comprehensive nationwide campaign designed to transform financial education and broaden retail participation across the country. Through this ambitious initiative, the corporate regulator aims to educate and onboard 2.5 million capital market investors, with a distinct focus on engaging the country’s massive youth demographic. The strategic roadmap seeks to democratize access to financial knowledge, moving investment awareness beyond traditional commercial centers and integrating young citizens into the formal financial ecosystem. By fostering early investment habits, the regulator plans to build a resilient investor base capable of contributing directly to national economic growth and capital formation.

The detailed framework of this initiative was finalized during a meeting of the policy board of the Institute of Financial Markets, presided over by SECP Chairman Dr. Kabir Sidhu. During the proceedings, the board approved the strategic relocation of the institute headquarters to Islamabad to align its operations more closely with central regulatory oversight. To maintain continuity and seamless service delivery in the financial hub, the institute regional office in Karachi will remain fully operational. SECP Chairman Dr. Kabir Sidhu emphasized that equipping young Pakistanis with financial literacy represents an urgent national priority. He noted that encouraging active participation in the stock market allows youth to become direct stakeholders in the economic development and corporate progress of the nation.

To achieve its target of reaching millions of prospective investors, the Institute of Financial Markets is rolling out a structured multi-tier educational program across educational institutions nationwide. The initiative includes targeted training sessions and workshops specifically designed for school and university students to build foundational financial awareness from an early age. Complementing these physical outreach programs, the institute is introducing free, accessible online courses covering key concepts of capital markets, equity investments, and portfolio management. By leveraging digital learning tools, the regulator ensures that high-quality investment education is freely available to individuals regardless of their geographical location.

In addition to public investor education, the Institute of Financial Markets is introducing specialized professional certification programs tailored for the financial services sector. These certifications aim to upskill industry practitioners, build capacity within brokerage houses and asset management companies, and generate new employment opportunities as the capital market ecosystem expands. Highlighting the broader vision, SECP Commissioner Ali Farid Khawaja stressed the necessity of expanding the geographical footprint of individual investors. He asserted that participation in the Pakistan Stock Exchange must no longer remain concentrated strictly within Karachi, reinforcing the regulator commitment to creating a truly national investor landscape.
