National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Habib University Foundation to support higher education opportunities for young women from across Pakistan. Under the partnership, NBP will support the four-year academic journey of 13 female students pursuing undergraduate studies at Habib University in Karachi. The initiative gives preference to students from rural and underserved areas, where access to quality higher education can be constrained by financial and geographical barriers. The agreement was signed at the Habib University campus and forms part of NBP’s efforts to contribute to education and inclusive social development. Through the initiative, the bank and the foundation aim to help talented students continue their academic journeys and develop the knowledge and skills needed for professional opportunities and community participation.
The partnership is intended to address barriers that can prevent capable students from pursuing university education, particularly when the cost of a degree places pressure on household resources. Supporting students over a four-year academic period provides a longer-term commitment than a one-off educational contribution, although the organisations have not publicly disclosed the total financial value of the arrangement or the precise expenses covered. The announcement also did not specify the selection criteria beyond the preference for students from rural and underserved communities, nor did it provide application deadlines or details of any separate application process. NBP Chairman of the Board Naved A. Khan said the partnership reflects the bank’s commitment to supporting talented young women in pursuing their academic ambitions. The initiative is expected to give the selected students an opportunity to continue their studies and prepare for future roles in their chosen fields.
Habib University Foundation’s participation connects the financial support with undergraduate education at Habib University. The university’s president, Wasif Rizvi, welcomed the collaboration and described it as the beginning of a potentially enduring partnership. The MoU was signed by Mohammad Tariq Rafi, chairman of the foundation’s Resource Development Committee, and Mirza Muhammad Asim Baig, NBP’s Group Chief for Human Resource Management. Representatives from the foundation’s board, university leadership and NBP’s senior management attended the ceremony. While the immediate commitment covers 13 students, the organisations have not announced an expansion target or confirmed whether additional cohorts will be supported in subsequent years. The initiative nevertheless highlights the role that collaboration between financial institutions and educational organisations can play in helping students access higher education, particularly when financial constraints threaten to limit their academic options.
For NBP, the agreement adds an education-focused initiative to its broader community engagement activities, while Habib University Foundation gains a partner to help support students through their degree programmes. The impact will ultimately depend on how the support is implemented and whether it enables the selected students to complete their studies and pursue their intended career paths. Continued support for women’s education can also have effects beyond individual students by expanding access to professional opportunities and helping graduates contribute to businesses, public institutions and local communities. However, the current announcement relates specifically to the 13 students covered by the MoU; it does not establish a nationwide scholarship programme open to all applicants. Further information about eligibility, the funding arrangement and future opportunities would need to come from NBP or Habib University Foundation. The partnership marks a defined commitment to undergraduate education, with a particular focus on young women from underserved parts of Pakistan.
