Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), through its Center for Digital Assets Research (CeDAR), hosted Yawar Shah, former Chairman of the Board of SWIFT and former Managing Director at Citigroup and JPMorgan, on October 27, 2026, for discussions on the future of finance and technology. The visit brought international financial industry experience into the university’s academic environment, with a focus on career opportunities, blockchain applications and changes taking place across global financial services. Shah, who has also served as an adjunct professor at Columbia University, met students and faculty members to discuss how financial institutions are adapting to technological developments. The engagement reflected CeDAR’s focus on connecting academic research with industry knowledge in digital assets and financial innovation. The centre provides a platform for collaboration between academia, industry and public-sector stakeholders on blockchain-related research, digital asset policy and financial inclusion.
The visit began with a lecture titled “Careers at the Intersection of Finance and Technology,” attended by students enrolled in the Introduction to Blockchain: Technology and Applications course, alongside MBA students. Shah drew on his experience across major international financial institutions to discuss professional opportunities emerging where finance, technology and business operations intersect. The convergence of these fields has created demand for professionals who understand both financial systems and the technologies supporting them. Blockchain, digital payments, securities, risk management and financial infrastructure are among the areas relevant to this evolving professional landscape. For students preparing to enter the financial services sector, exposure to industry perspectives can help connect classroom learning with the practical requirements of financial institutions. The session also gave participants an opportunity to consider how technical knowledge, business understanding and awareness of international financial markets can contribute to careers in digital finance.
Following the lecture, Shah held an interactive discussion with LUMS faculty members on the future of global financial infrastructure, developments in blockchain technology and the growth of digital financial services. The discussion also explored opportunities to expand academic offerings at the university, linking emerging industry requirements with teaching and research. Global financial infrastructure supports the movement of payments and financial information between institutions, making its evolution an important consideration as digital services and new technologies develop. Blockchain has also attracted attention for its potential applications in digital asset systems and financial processes, although adoption depends on practical considerations such as regulation, security, governance and integration with existing systems. Discussions between experienced industry professionals and academic institutions can help identify the skills and research areas needed to understand these changes. The exchange at LUMS provided a setting to examine these issues from both professional and academic perspectives.
CeDAR’s engagement with Shah aligns with its wider role in promoting research and informed discussion on digital assets, blockchain technology and related policy questions in Pakistan. The centre was established at LUMS to support research, education and collaboration around emerging digital technologies, including their potential implications for financial services and economic development. Its activities can help bring together students, researchers, industry representatives and policymakers to examine opportunities as well as challenges associated with digital finance. The October 27 visit also highlighted the value of industry-academia engagement as universities consider how financial technology developments should be reflected in teaching and research programmes. While the visit did not announce a new financial product, commercial agreement or formal academic programme, it created an opportunity to exchange perspectives on career preparation and the changing structure of financial services. Continued dialogue of this kind can contribute to a better understanding of blockchain and digital finance among future professionals and researchers.
