NCERT issued a cybersecurity warning regarding a surge in fake delivery package scams. The scams target unsuspecting individuals through text messages (SMS) disguised as legitimate notifications from courier services like Pakistan Post, TCS, Leopard, and FedEx.
These deceptive messages typically include a tracking number and urge recipients to update their delivery addresses via a malicious link. Clicking the link can lead to theft of personal information or malware installation on the user’s device.
According to NCERT, scammers exploit the public’s anticipation of package deliveries to create a sense of urgency. The messages appear authentic, often including a tracking number and using familiar branding of trusted courier companies.
NCERT advises the public to be cautious with SMS messages, especially those with urgency or grammatical errors. Never click on links in unsolicited messages. Instead, verify the sender’s phone number or email address and contact the delivery service directly through their official channels for verification.
The advisory further recommends hovering over links before clicking to check their actual destination. Additionally, keeping security software updated, updating operating systems and applications regularly, and being skeptical of urgent requests can help protect against these scams.
NCERT emphasizes that reputable courier services don’t request payments or address changes through SMS. By following these guidelines and remaining vigilant, individuals can protect themselves from these ongoing scams.
