Swich Secures NBFC License As Fintech Enters Next Phase Of Digital Finance Growth In Pakistan

Swich has secured its Non-Banking Finance Company license, a regulatory milestone the fintech company says marks the next phase of its journey and opens new possibilities as it continues building for the future of digital finance in Pakistan. The company announced the development on LinkedIn, describing the license as a door opening for its business and tagging several members of its leadership and team who were involved in reaching the milestone.

In Pakistan, NBFCs are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, which issues licenses, monitors compliance, and takes enforcement actions when necessary. The framework is distinct from banking, since NBFCs cannot accept demand deposits and are regulated by SECP, and they typically specialize in particular financial services such as lending, leasing, or investment finance rather than offering the full range of services a bank provides. For a fintech company, holding an NBFC license generally means it can carry out regulated financial activities under its own authorization instead of depending entirely on a bank or another licensed partner to sit behind its products.

The licensing process itself is demanding. Applicants are expected to incorporate as a public limited company, meet capital and governance requirements, present a detailed business plan, and satisfy fit and proper criteria for directors before SECP grants approval. Industry guides note that NBFC licenses for fintechs typically require substantial paid-up capital, which makes securing one a notable step for a growing company. For Swich, which has been active in Pakistan’s payments and digital finance space and recently ran a PayPak-linked retail discount campaign with INSIGNIA, the license adds a regulated financial services layer to a platform that customers already use for online transactions.

Swich described the announcement as the start of a new chapter rather than a finished project, and said the license creates new possibilities for what it can build next. The company did not outline which specific products or services it plans to launch under the license, so the exact direction of its expansion, whether toward digital lending, financing for consumers and merchants, or other regulated offerings, will become clearer as Swich shares further updates. What the license does establish is that the company now sits inside SECP’s formal regulatory perimeter for non-bank finance, giving it a foundation to develop financial products that customers and partners can rely on as regulated services within Pakistan’s growing digital finance ecosystem.
