Meezan Bank and Visa Launch Pakistan’s First Visa Student Debit Card

Visa (NYSE: V), a global leader in digital payments, has partnered with Meezan Bank, Pakistan’s premier Islamic bank, to launch the country’s first Visa debit card exclusively for students. This collaboration aims to empower young Pakistanis by integrating them into the digital financial ecosystem.

The Meezan Visa Student Debit Card will cater to university students aged 18 to 24, offering secure, convenient, and rewarding financial services tailored to their needs. The card will be issued free of charge to holders of the Meezan Asaan Student Account, a financial platform designed specifically for students to manage their finances efficiently and affordably.

The launch event was graced by Andrew Torre, Visa’s Regional President for Central Europe, Middle East, and Africa (CEMEA), and Irfan Siddiqui, Founding President and CEO of Meezan Bank. Both leaders emphasized the importance of financial inclusion and the role of this initiative in integrating Pakistan’s youth into the digital economy.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the country’s financial inclusion rate stands at a modest 21%. With over 2.4 million students enrolled in higher education institutions nationwide, this initiative has the potential to make a significant impact. The Meezan Visa Student Debit Card, scheduled for rollout in Q1 2025, aligns with Pakistan Vision 2025’s goal of leveraging the energy and potential of the country’s extensive youth population to drive economic growth.

Visa’s Country Manager for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Umar Khan, highlighted the initiative’s broader significance. “We’re proud to join forces with Meezan Bank on this financial inclusion initiative targeting youth. Empowering students with financial tools is vital for their future success and the nation’s economic growth. This card is more than a financial product—it represents Visa’s long-term commitment to creating a financially inclusive Pakistan,” he stated.

Irfan Siddiqui, President, and CEO of Meezan Bank, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the transformative potential of the card. “This partnership enables us to reach a crucial segment of society, providing students with a secure and convenient way to manage their finances while fostering financial literacy from an early age. The Meezan Visa Student Debit Card is a significant milestone in empowering Pakistan’s youth and promoting financial inclusion.”

The card aims to instill responsible financial habits among students, enabling them to participate more actively in the economy and contribute to a financially inclusive society. The initiative also complements Pakistan Vision 2025’s focus on equipping the youth with tools and knowledge to unlock their economic potential.

Visa and Meezan Bank’s collaboration marks a pivotal step in addressing the financial needs of Pakistan’s student population. By combining accessibility with tailored financial solutions, the initiative paves the way for a more inclusive financial system, empowering young people to make informed decisions and secure their financial futures.
