HugoBank has received approval from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to initiate pilot operations, marking a key step toward the launch of its digital banking services in Pakistan. The approval allows the upcoming digital bank to test its products, banking systems and operational readiness under real-world conditions with a limited customer base before moving toward a full public launch. The pilot phase will allow HugoBank to assess how its technology and services perform in actual operating conditions while ensuring that its security measures, regulatory compliance processes and customer experience meet the requirements for a wider rollout.
The pilot approval represents an important stage in HugoBank’s development as it works toward establishing a technology-driven banking platform for customers in Pakistan. During the controlled phase, the bank will be able to gather operational insights and customer feedback while evaluating its products and systems. This process is intended to help the institution identify areas that require refinement before services are made available on a broader scale. The bank has stated that the pilot will place particular focus on security, compliance and user experience as it prepares for its eventual public launch.
HugoBank is being developed with a focus on providing a simpler digital banking experience and reducing some of the complexities traditionally associated with banking services. The institution aims to provide customers with access to digital financial services through a technology-focused platform designed around convenience and accessibility. Asim Hasan, Chief Executive Officer of HugoBank, said the bank aims to serve as a financial freedom and wellness partner for customers while combining the operational discipline expected from a financial institution with the flexibility of modern technology. The bank also intends to make its digital financial services available to customers across the country.
The pilot phase will also allow HugoBank to assess its risk management frameworks and technological infrastructure before expanding its operations. The bank has described the controlled market entry as part of its approach to establishing secure and reliable digital banking services. By operating with a limited customer base initially, HugoBank can monitor system performance, evaluate operational processes and use feedback to refine its products. This stage is particularly important for a digital bank because technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, compliance controls and customer-facing services all need to work together effectively before a full-scale launch.
HugoBank had previously received in-principle approval from SBP to establish a digital retail bank in Pakistan, following the central bank’s introduction of a licensing and regulatory framework for digital banks. The latest pilot approval moves the institution further along the regulatory and operational path toward commercial launch. As Pakistan’s digital financial ecosystem continues to expand, HugoBank’s entry adds another digital banking platform to a market increasingly focused on technology-based financial services, accessibility and customer experience. The bank will now use the controlled pilot period to test its offerings, incorporate operational learnings and prepare for the next stage of its launch.
