SECP Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Loan Apps, Blocks 132, Urges Public Caution

In a proactive measure aimed at safeguarding the public from the dangers of illicit loan activities, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has ramped up its monitoring of social media and websites to identify and combat illegal personal loan applications (apps).

According to a recent press release from the SECP, the regulatory authority has pinpointed eight additional illicit apps distributed as Android Package Kit (APK) files across various platforms, including APK websites, emails, and social media channels.

Working in tandem with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the SECP has swiftly taken action against these unlawful apps. A total of 132 illegal apps have been successfully blocked through collaborative efforts involving the SECP, Google, Apple, FIA, and PTA.

This coordinated crackdown has prompted operators of illegal apps to migrate their activities to alternative platforms like APK websites and social media. These illicit apps not only endanger user safety but also carry significant risks, including the potential misuse of personal and financial information, fraud, and harassment.

In a stern warning to the general public, the SECP has advised against downloading apps from unauthorized sources such as websites, emails, or social media links. An updated list of identified illegal apps is available on the SECP website and is regularly shared with app stores, the PTA, and the FIA.

To ensure user safety, the SECP strongly urges the public to only download personal loan apps from SECP-approved sources, exclusively available on the official app stores of Google and Apple. The list of approved personal loan apps can also be accessed on the SECP website for the convenience of the general public.
