Upwork has introduced a direct-to-wallet withdrawal option for freelancers in Pakistan, allowing users to transfer their earnings to local mobile wallets without first routing payments through an intermediary service or conventional bank account. The platform’s updated support documentation lists five Pakistani wallet providers: JazzCash, Easypaisa, NayaPay, SadaPay and Finja. The feature allows eligible freelancers to receive their earnings in Pakistani rupees, with most transfers typically arriving within minutes, according to Upwork. The update provides another withdrawal route for Pakistani professionals working with international clients through the freelancing marketplace, where access to convenient and affordable payment channels remains an important part of receiving overseas earnings. Previously, many freelancers relied on services such as Payoneer before transferring their funds to local bank accounts or mobile wallets. Direct wallet withdrawals could simplify this process by connecting Upwork earnings with locally available payment services. The feature began appearing in Pakistani user accounts on November 6, although availability may depend on the user’s profile country and the withdrawal options displayed within their account.
According to Upwork’s help centre, freelancers can add the new withdrawal method through their account settings by opening the Withdrawals section, selecting Add a Method and choosing the direct-to-wallet setup option. Users must already have an active account with their selected wallet before adding it to Upwork. The platform also requires the first and last names registered with the wallet to match the verified name on the freelancer’s Upwork account exactly. This requirement is intended to ensure that withdrawals are directed to accounts belonging to the verified user. For security reasons, a newly added withdrawal method takes three days to become active. Once activated, most transfers are expected to arrive within minutes, although Upwork advises users to contact support if a withdrawal has not arrived after 24 hours and there are no issues reported by the wallet provider. Withdrawal limits vary between providers, with the applicable maximum displayed when users add a wallet or initiate a transaction. These conditions mean freelancers should verify their account details, wallet status and transaction limits before relying on the service for receiving payments.
The development comes as Pakistan’s freelance economy continues to contribute to the country’s foreign exchange earnings through software development, IT-enabled services, digital marketing, design and other remote professional services. Faster access to international earnings can help freelancers manage their cash flows and reduce the number of steps involved in transferring money into locally accessible accounts. The addition of five wallet providers also gives users more flexibility when choosing how to receive payments, particularly those who prefer mobile financial services over traditional banking channels. For digital wallet operators, integration with an international freelancing marketplace provides another route through which overseas earnings can enter Pakistan’s digital payment ecosystem. However, the practical value of the option will depend on transaction limits, applicable charges, exchange rates and the reliability of transfers across individual providers. Upwork’s direct-to-wallet service is also available in Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines and Kenya, indicating that the company is expanding local withdrawal options across several freelance markets. For Pakistani users, the addition of JazzCash, Easypaisa, NayaPay, SadaPay and Finja offers a more direct route for accessing platform earnings while retaining the option of using existing bank and payment services.
