PVARA Hosts World Bank Team to Discuss Digital Finance Collaboration

The Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority hosted the World Bank Pakistan team for a discussion centered on the future of digital finance and emerging technologies, bringing together two institutions working on different but overlapping aspects of the country’s financial infrastructure. The meeting gave both sides a chance to explore where their respective mandates and areas of expertise could intersect as digital finance continues to evolve globally and within Pakistan specifically.

The conversation covered a range of areas, including tokenisation, digital financial infrastructure, capital market development, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and private capital mobilisation. Each of these areas touches on a different layer of how modern financial systems are being rebuilt around digital rails, from tokenising traditional assets to using AI in financial oversight and drawing private investment into infrastructure that supports digital transactions. Discussing them together in a single session reflects how closely these areas are now seen as connected within global policy conversations on digital finance, rather than being treated as separate, standalone issues.

PVARA framed the discussion around the idea that Pakistan has an opportunity to engage early as global institutions increasingly bring these issues into mainstream economic policy discussions. The regulator pointed to building institutional capacity and helping shape the next generation of financial infrastructure as key goals behind engaging with an institution like the World Bank on these topics, positioning early engagement as a way for Pakistan to have more influence over how emerging financial technologies are eventually regulated and adopted domestically.

No specific outcomes, agreements, or next steps were disclosed following the meeting, and neither PVARA nor the World Bank indicated a timeline for when any concrete collaboration in these areas might take shape. The discussion appears to be an early-stage engagement between the two institutions, with the framing suggesting further conversations could follow as both sides continue to explore where formal collaboration might be most useful for Pakistan’s digital finance ecosystem.
