HBL has partnered with AKD Securities Limited to enable customers to open Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) trading accounts in real time through the HBL Mobile application, connecting digital banking services with access to Pakistan’s capital markets. The bank described the initiative as the first arrangement of its kind by a commercial bank in Pakistan, allowing customers to initiate the account-opening process through their mobile banking platform rather than relying on traditional paperwork or visiting a branch. The service has been introduced with the support of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL). Under the arrangement, eligible HBL customers can open trading accounts within minutes through the application, reducing the steps involved in accessing brokerage services. The initiative brings together a commercial bank, a securities brokerage firm and institutions involved in the country’s capital-market infrastructure, creating a digital onboarding route for customers interested in investing in listed securities.
The partnership is intended to make entry into the stock market more convenient by connecting an existing banking relationship with brokerage account registration. Traditionally, individuals seeking to invest in shares have needed to select a registered securities broker, complete the relevant account-opening requirements and undergo identity verification and other regulatory checks. Digital onboarding arrangements can reduce the need for physical document submission while allowing participating institutions to exchange customer information through approved processes. The Pakistan Stock Exchange has already outlined a Shared KYC framework through which eligible resident Pakistani investors can initiate stock-market onboarding using information held by participating banks. Under this framework, customers provide consent for their KYC information to be shared with relevant capital-market institutions, while the broker and other entities complete their respective verification and account-opening responsibilities. HBL’s new arrangement with AKD Securities adds a bank-led mobile application route to this broader shift towards digital access to investment services. However, the announcement does not specify whether the facility uses the existing Shared KYC framework or disclose the complete technical process behind the integration.
The development was marked in the presence of senior representatives from the participating organisations, including Muhammad Nassir Salim, President and Chief Executive Officer of HBL; Aqeel Karim Dhedhi, Chairman of AKD Group; Hina Dhedhi Junaid, Chairperson of AKD Securities; and Naveed Qazi, Chief Executive Officer of NCCPL. Senior leadership from HBL, AKD Securities and NCCPL also attended the occasion. Their participation reflects the involvement of banking, brokerage and market infrastructure institutions in expanding digital access to investment accounts. For HBL, the facility extends its mobile banking proposition beyond conventional account management and payment services by providing customers with a route to begin the process of entering the securities market. For AKD Securities, the partnership creates an additional digital onboarding channel through the customer base of a major commercial bank. The involvement of SECP and NCCPL is also relevant because opening a brokerage account requires compliance with applicable regulatory and verification requirements, as well as the processes through which investor identities and trading accounts are recorded within the market infrastructure.
The new facility could make the initial process of entering Pakistan’s stock market more accessible to individuals who already use HBL Mobile and prefer digital financial services. Nevertheless, opening a trading account should be distinguished from placing and executing stock-market orders. HBL’s announcement confirms the account-opening facility but does not state that customers can buy or sell shares directly through the HBL Mobile application. It has also not disclosed any applicable brokerage charges, minimum investment requirements, account eligibility conditions, supported account types or the full range of investment services available after registration. Investors will still need to understand the terms offered by their selected broker, complete applicable verification requirements and consider the risks associated with securities trading. The partnership represents another development in the integration of Pakistan’s banking and capital-market services, with digital onboarding providing a more convenient starting point for customers seeking access to PSX investment opportunities.
