HBL Microfinance Bank has announced the expansion of its Climate-Smart Agri-Financing initiative to farmers across Punjab in partnership with the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). The initiative combines satellite-based data intelligence with agricultural financing to support a more technology-driven approach to assessing farming conditions and related financing risks. Already in the implementation phase, the programme brings together SUPARCO’s remote-sensing capabilities and HBL Microfinance Bank’s established presence among agricultural communities, along with its experience in providing financing to farmers. The expansion across Punjab is aimed at increasing the use of data and technology in agricultural finance while supporting more informed financing decisions.
Under the initiative, HBL Microfinance Bank will leverage SUPARCO’s satellite data, crop monitoring capabilities and remote-sensing analytics at a broader scale. These technologies can provide information related to land use and crop conditions, giving the bank additional data points when assessing agricultural activities. Instead of relying only on conventional information collected through on-ground interactions, the use of satellite-based intelligence introduces another layer of visibility into farming conditions. For a microfinance institution with an agricultural financing portfolio, access to such information can support the assessment of conditions across farming areas and contribute to more informed decisions regarding agriculture-related financing.
The partnership is particularly focused on the use of technology to improve the assessment of agricultural conditions across Punjab.
