Tech Giants Amazon Meta and Microsoft Join Universal Commerce Protocol Tech Council

The global landscape of digital trade has reached a pivotal turning point as industry titans Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Stripe have officially joined the Universal Commerce Protocol Tech Council. This technical body is responsible for steering the open standard for agentic commerce, which defines the framework for how artificial intelligence agents interact with businesses and consumers. By joining the council, these major corporations align themselves with founding members including Google, Shopify, Etsy, Target, and Wayfair, signaling a massive industry convergence toward a unified digital language for AI-driven transactions.

The emergence of AI agents as a primary interface for product discovery and purchasing has necessitated the creation of a shared and open protocol. Without a standardized system like the Universal Commerce Protocol, different platforms would continue to operate in silos, creating friction for developers and consumers alike. The protocol is designed to handle the immense complexity of modern commerce by covering the entire shopping journey. This includes everything from initial product discovery and cart building to the final checkout process and post-purchase customer service interactions across any digital platform or payment processor.

Each member of the Tech Council brings a unique set of expertise in global payments and retail operations, yet they are united by the single goal of building an open ecosystem for agentic commerce. The council is tasked with aligning the technical direction of the protocol, which involves reviewing new contribution proposals and stewarding the open-source code. This collaborative effort ensures that the standards evolve quickly enough to meet the rapidly changing needs of businesses, developers, and the general public. The participation of these new members accelerates the technical evolution of the system and drives its adoption as the definitive industry standard.

Vidhya Srinivasan, Vice President and General Manager of Ads and Commerce at Google, noted that the protocol is rapidly paving the way for a new era of commerce. The industry-wide collaboration around a shared standard is expected to bring significant benefits to businesses of all sizes and consumers globally. By creating a level playing field, the protocol allows for greater innovation in how AI can assist in the shopping experience without being hindered by proprietary barriers that often slow down the adoption of new technologies.

The objective of the council is to build a framework that can function at the massive scale required by global commerce. Vanessa Lee, Vice President of Product at Shopify, emphasized that while AI can enable numerous new ways for shopping to flourish, those opportunities can only be realized if there is a clear and consistent standard between retailers and applications. The addition of companies like Microsoft and Meta ensures that the protocol will be robust enough to handle trillions of data points and transactions, making agentic commerce a reality for the mainstream market.

This movement toward a single open standard reflects a broader trend in the technology sector toward interoperability. As reported by specialized resources like fintechnews.pk and bankopedia, the success of digital transformation initiatives often depends on the ability of different systems to communicate effectively. With the industry now converging on the Universal Commerce Protocol, both businesses and consumers are set to benefit from a more streamlined, efficient, and intelligent shopping ecosystem that leverages the full power of artificial intelligence.
