PSX Educates COMSATS University Students on Stock Market Investing, Financial Planning and Virtual Trading Tools

Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has conducted an investor awareness session for students of COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), introducing participants to stock market operations, financial planning and investment opportunities available in the country. The session focused on the role of the capital market in Pakistan’s economy and the importance of understanding savings and investment before making financial decisions. Students were introduced to different asset classes available to investors and learned about the functions of the stock exchange within the broader financial system. The initiative forms part of PSX’s investor education efforts, which aim to improve financial literacy among students and other members of the public. By familiarising university students with the basics of investing and market operations, the session sought to provide an educational foundation for understanding how individuals and businesses participate in the capital market.

During the session, participants learned about the process of trading securities through the exchange and the distinction between primary and secondary markets. The primary market enables companies and other eligible issuers to raise capital by offering securities to investors, while the secondary market allows investors to buy and sell listed securities among themselves. Understanding these processes can help students recognise how capital markets connect businesses seeking funding with investors looking for investment opportunities. The session also covered financial planning and savings, highlighting the importance of considering financial goals, investment time horizons and risk before committing funds. Different asset classes carry different levels of risk and potential return, and investors need to understand the characteristics of each option rather than treating stock-market participation as a guaranteed source of profit. The awareness session provided students with an introduction to these concepts and an opportunity to raise questions about capital market operations.

PSX also introduced students to its digital resources, including the official exchange website, the PSX Data Portal and My Portfolio, its virtual trading platform. The Data Portal provides market-related information that users can explore to improve their understanding of listed companies and trading activity. My Portfolio allows users to practise building and tracking investment portfolios using virtual money and real market information, enabling them to observe how investment decisions may affect portfolio performance without committing actual funds. The platform can help beginners learn about stock symbols, portfolio allocation, dividends, transaction costs and gains or losses in a simulated environment. PSX has used My Portfolio in other educational sessions with students and professionals as part of its wider financial literacy initiatives. Virtual trading does not eliminate the risks associated with actual investing, but it can provide a practical starting point for understanding how market prices and portfolio decisions interact.

The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment in which students sought information about investment strategies and the operations of Pakistan’s capital markets. PSX’s investor awareness programme is intended to make financial information more accessible and help potential investors develop the knowledge needed to assess investment opportunities responsibly. Students interested in learning more can explore the exchange’s official website, review market information through the PSX Data Portal and learn about simulated investing through My Portfolio. The virtual platform is an educational tool rather than a brokerage account for real-money trading. Anyone considering actual investments should understand the risks involved, verify information through official sources and use an appropriately licensed securities broker. Through sessions such as the one held at COMSATS University Islamabad, PSX continues to introduce students to financial planning, stock-market fundamentals and digital resources that can support their understanding of Pakistan’s capital markets.
