Mastercard Partners with Bank of Punjab to Enhance Digital Banking and Financial Inclusion in Pakistan

Mastercard has partnered with Bank of Punjab (BOP) to elevate the bank’s digital offerings and provide an enhanced experience for its customers across various segments, including consumer debit and credit, affluent portfolios, and loyalty programs. This strategic collaboration aims to redefine BOP’s digital ecosystem and improve the digital experience for its users.

As part of the partnership, customers enrolled in BOP’s KHAAS priority banking program will now have access to Mastercard’s premium World and World Elite cards. These products are designed to meet the needs of affluent and high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) in Pakistan, further strengthening KHAAS’s position as the country’s leading priority program. Additionally, Mastercard’s involvement will allow BOP to expand into new affluent market segments with an updated customer value proposition (CVP), offering top-tier products and services.

The collaboration also includes the launch of Islamic credit cards in response to the increasing demand for Sharia-compliant financial products in Pakistan. Alongside this, BOP will introduce an enterprise-wide loyalty program, leveraging Mastercard’s Pay with Rewards and Mastercard Rewards Solutions. Pay with Rewards offers cardholders the unique ability to redeem loyalty points as cash during purchases, ensuring seamless and instant rewards redemption. This feature is expected to enhance customer satisfaction and engagement by offering a flexible, user-friendly rewards system.

BOP will also enhance the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) of its mobile app, digiBOP, with the assistance of Mastercard’s Digital Spark Lab. This innovation hub will provide BOP with cutting-edge digital technologies and design thinking expertise to create a more intuitive and user-friendly mobile banking experience.

In addition to these upgrades, Mastercard and BOP have focused on improving transit payments, low-cost acceptance solutions, and Mastercard Gateway, further enhancing the payment experience for BOP customers. Notably, the partnership includes the launch of the Kissan Card, a government-backed initiative designed to provide small farmers with interest-free loans via Mastercard credit cards. This initiative will enable farmers to make digital transactions with agri-dealers using Mastercard’s low-cost Tap-on-Phone payment solutions. The partners have also introduced the Livestock Card, which offers interest-free financing based on livestock assets, marking significant progress in the digitization of Pakistan’s agricultural sector.

“Mastercard is our trusted partner in executing our digital transformation strategy. We are delighted to strengthen our relationship to bring added value and convenience across multiple aspects of our offerings. The collaboration will reinforce our position as Pakistan’s fastest-growing digital bank focused on innovation, best-in-class products, customer experience and digital solutions,” said Nofel Daud, Chief Digital Officer, BOP.

“At Mastercard, we are committed to harnessing the power of partnerships to support Pakistan’s digital transformation and economic growth. Collaboration with BOP, our key ecosystem partner enables us to jointly  launch new initiatives to drive financial inclusion, digitize payment flows and provide greater financial access to under-served segments. We thank BOP for their trust in Mastercard as their principal partner across all portfolios and services. This new exciting partnership also enhances BoP’s affluent proposition, provides enterprise-wide loyalty, innovation in the Islamic banking space and boost its customers’ digital experience,” said Arslan Khan, Country Manager, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Mastercard.

The relationship between Mastercard and BOP has proven productive over the years. In 2023, the two companies introduced a freelancer digital account and card, which was developed in collaboration with the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) to cater to the growing gig economy. Earlier this year, BOP became the first bank in Pakistan to issue Mastercard SME cards, addressing the needs of the country’s millions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and freelancers. BOP is also a supporter of Mastercard’s Strive Women program, which seeks to improve financial access for women entrepreneurs in Pakistan.

Mastercard continues to play a key role in driving economic growth and financial inclusion in Pakistan, empowering individuals and businesses with innovative digital solutions. By collaborating with BOP, Mastercard is further solidifying its commitment to supporting the country’s digital transformation and ensuring that more people can access secure, simple, and smart financial services.

As both companies continue to build on their successful partnership, the future looks promising for the expansion of digital banking solutions in Pakistan. The enhanced offerings and services are set to significantly improve the banking experience for individuals, businesses, and underserved communities across the country.
