Circle Acquires IBM Blockchain Patent Portfolio to Expand Onchain Infrastructure

Circle has acquired key assets from IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio in a deal that expands the company’s intellectual property holdings across blockchain technology and digital financial infrastructure. The acquisition covers more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide, with the portfolio spanning areas including foundational blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification and secure cloud operations. Circle said the acquisition makes it the leading blockchain patent holder in the United States and adds intellectual property that can support the development of its onchain financial infrastructure. The deal gives Circle access to a broad collection of patents covering technologies that extend beyond cryptocurrency and blockchain applications.

The acquired portfolio is expected to support Circle’s broader infrastructure strategy, including its USDC stablecoin, Circle Payments Network, Arc and other onchain products and financial tools. Circle has been expanding its presence across digital assets, payment applications and programmable blockchain infrastructure, with its products focused on connecting traditional financial activities with blockchain-based systems. The company’s USDC stablecoin remains a key part of its digital asset infrastructure, while Circle Payments Network is designed to facilitate global money movement. Arc, meanwhile, is positioned as an enterprise-focused blockchain platform. The addition of IBM’s blockchain patents provides Circle with further intellectual property related to technologies that can be applied across these areas.

The breadth of IBM’s patent portfolio means the acquisition covers technologies relevant to several industries and use cases, including financial services, banking, insurance, enterprise operations and secure cloud environments. Blockchain technology has increasingly been explored for applications involving payments, settlement, verification, digital assets and financial infrastructure, while intellectual property surrounding these technologies has become increasingly important for companies developing blockchain-based products. Circle said intellectual property plays an important role in advancing its mission and expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure. The company also highlighted IBM’s history of technological innovation and described the acquisition as an opportunity to build on the technologies covered by the portfolio.

The agreement also provides the two companies with an opportunity to explore additional commercial cooperation. Circle and IBM plan to investigate potential commercial opportunities following the acquisition, although specific details of any future collaboration were not disclosed. For Circle, the transaction comes as it continues to develop infrastructure connecting stablecoins, blockchain networks, payments and financial applications. The company’s expanding product ecosystem includes digital asset and payment infrastructure designed for businesses and financial institutions, while its broader strategy focuses on bringing more financial activity onto blockchain networks.

The acquisition of IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio marks another development in the growing relationship between blockchain technology and financial infrastructure. By adding more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents to its intellectual property holdings, Circle is expanding its position across blockchain and related technologies. The portfolio’s coverage of financial services, enterprise systems, cloud operations and other applications provides Circle with intellectual property that can support its work across digital assets and onchain finance. The company is expected to continue developing its blockchain infrastructure and financial technology products as the use of stablecoins, digital payments and tokenized financial services expands globally.
