Government of Punjab Launches Green Transportation Initiatives with BOP Partnership

The Government of Punjab’s Transport Department marked a transformative step in the transportation sector with a launch event on January 09, 2024, at Faletti’s Hotel Lahore. The initiative underscores GoPb’s commitment to fostering sustainable and eco-friendly transportation methods.

A key highlight is the introduction of an interest-free scheme in collaboration with The Bank of Punjab (BOP), aiming to provide 10,000 e-bikes to university students across Punjab. Additionally, GoPb initiated the registration of retrofitted three-wheelers and issued the inaugural license for eRickshaws, marking significant strides toward sustainable transportation in Punjab.

The event witnessed the presence of Mr. Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Chief Minister of Punjab, who emphasized his government’s dedication to promoting e-Mobility for environmental benefits. Mr. Zafar Masud, President/CEO of BOP, high-level government representatives, and delegates from electronic vehicle manufacturers were also in attendance.

Chief Minister Naqvi announced the exclusive purchase of e-bikes by GoPb and outlined plans for providing 2,000 e-Bikes for Government Servants, 2,000 for Working Women, and 2,000 e-Scooties for disabled persons through an interest-free program.

Zafar Masud highlighted the program’s core advantages, including promoting Economic Activity, Environmental Sustainability, Youth Empowerment, Green Financing, Financial Inclusion, and Wider Demographic accessibility in Punjab. He expressed gratitude to CM Punjab and underscored the partnership’s significance in contributing to environmental preservation.

Masud mentioned ongoing negotiations for a €50 million agreement with a foreign agency to support green-financing projects through BOP, aligning with the bank’s commitment to integrating environmental considerations into the banking system.
