Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb visited the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) headquarters in Karachi and met NBP President Imran Sarwar and Chairman Naved A. Khan to discuss matters concerning the bank and broader priorities for Pakistan’s financial sector. The meeting took place as NBP continues to focus on financial inclusion, digital transformation, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and improvements in customer services. During the meeting, the Finance Minister congratulated Imran Sarwar on his appointment as NBP President and conveyed his best wishes for the new role. The discussions covered the bank’s ongoing initiatives and performance, as well as the wider role of the banking sector in supporting the country’s financial and economic priorities.
NBP President Imran Sarwar briefed the Finance Minister on the bank’s efforts to promote women’s financial inclusion and economic participation. Financial inclusion remains an important area for Pakistan’s banking sector, particularly in expanding access to formal financial services among segments that have historically had lower participation. NBP’s discussion with the Finance Minister also covered its initiatives for supporting SMEs, which represent an important part of economic activity and employment. The bank outlined its efforts to facilitate businesses through financial services while also working on customer-focused improvements. The meeting therefore brought together several areas of banking activity, including access to finance, digital services and support for businesses, within the broader discussion on the financial sector’s contribution to the economy.
Digital transformation was another major area discussed during the meeting. NBP has been working on expanding technology-based banking services and improving the way customers interact with the bank. The focus on digital transformation comes as Pakistan’s financial sector continues to adopt digital channels for payments, account access, customer services and other banking activities. The Finance Ministry has also identified digitalisation and emerging technologies as part of its broader economic agenda. In recent remarks, Finance Minister Aurangzeb highlighted digitalisation, blockchain, Web 3.0 and emerging technologies as areas relevant to Pakistan’s efforts to develop the New Economy. The government has also been discussing greater access to finance for SMEs, agriculture, housing and underserved segments as part of its wider economic priorities.
The meeting also highlighted the wider role expected from Pakistan’s banking sector in supporting financial and economic priorities. The Finance Minister has previously held discussions with banking-sector representatives on financial stability, access to finance and coordination between the government, regulators and financial institutions. More recently, the government has placed emphasis on expanding financing for SMEs, agriculture and housing while also seeking to deepen Pakistan’s capital markets. Against this backdrop, NBP’s focus on financial inclusion, digital transformation, SME support and customer services forms part of the broader banking-sector agenda. The meeting with NBP leadership provided an opportunity to review these areas and discuss how the bank can contribute to financial-sector priorities while continuing to develop services for customers and businesses across Pakistan.
