The Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8) and Al-Hidayah Group have discussed plans to advance digital trade, investment and economic cooperation among D-8 member countries through a proposed digital platform. The discussions took place at the D-8 Secretariat in Istanbul, where Secretary-General Ambassador Sohail Mahmood met a delegation led by Al-Hidayah Group Chairman Dato’ Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari, a former D-8 Secretary-General. The meeting reviewed progress under a Memorandum of Cooperation signed in July 2023, focusing on opportunities to use digital infrastructure to connect businesses, expand market access and support cross-border commercial activities across member states.
Al-Hidayah Group presented its proposed economic model, which includes an integrated digital platform intended to facilitate trade and investment between participating countries. The initiative aims to improve market access for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), encourage financial inclusion and mobilise resources for productive economic activities. By connecting businesses through digital channels, the proposed platform could help enterprises explore new markets, identify commercial partners and access opportunities beyond their domestic economies. SMEs often face challenges when entering international markets, including limited access to business networks, financing and cross-border trading opportunities. Digital platforms can help reduce some of these barriers by providing a central point for commercial connections, although the actual benefits will depend on the services introduced and participation from businesses.
The discussions also highlighted the potential role of digital trade in supporting economic growth and closer cooperation among D-8 members. The organisation brings together Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Türkiye, with cooperation focused on economic development and trade relations. An integrated digital platform could provide businesses with additional channels to engage with counterparts in these markets and explore investment opportunities. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood emphasised the importance of practical, commercially viable and inclusive initiatives that complement the D-8 economic cooperation agenda. He also highlighted the role of private-sector participation and digital transformation in developing stronger economic links. However, the announcement did not specify the platform’s technical structure, payment arrangements, participating businesses or planned launch date.
Both sides discussed further consultations with relevant institutions and stakeholders across D-8 member states to explore the next steps for advancing the initiative. These consultations will be important in determining how the proposed platform could operate across different markets, regulatory systems and commercial environments. Questions concerning governance, financing, business participation and the services offered will also need to be addressed before implementation. The discussions reflect continued interest in using digital infrastructure to facilitate cross-border commerce and expand opportunities for businesses across the D-8 region. If implemented, the platform could offer SMEs another route to international markets and commercial partnerships, while supporting broader regional trade cooperation. No final implementation timeline or launch commitment was announced.
