Bank Alfalah and Shell Pakistan Roll Out Raast P2M QR Payments Across Fuel Stations to Accelerate Cashless Transactions

Bank Alfalah, in collaboration with Shell Pakistan operated by Wafi Energy, has initiated the rollout of Raast Person-to-Merchant (P2M) QR payment acceptance across Shell fuel stations, marking a notable milestone in Pakistan’s digital payment adoption journey. The deployment begins with the activation of QR payments at 42 company-owned and company-operated (COCO) Shell sites as part of the first implementation phase, signaling a shift toward enabling efficient, secure, and cashless transactions at one of the most frequented consumer touchpoints in the country.

This initiative enables customers to make fuel payments simply by scanning a Raast P2M QR code using any Raast-compatible mobile banking application. With the availability of a unified QR code across participating stations, users are able to complete transactions seamlessly without relying on cash or traditional card-based payments. The development reinforces Bank Alfalah’s ongoing role in supporting digital payment infrastructure nationwide and demonstrates Shell Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing customer experience through technology.

Raast, the national instant payment system launched by the State Bank of Pakistan, continues to gain momentum as a transformative force within Pakistan’s financial ecosystem. Designed to facilitate free and instant person-to-person and person-to-merchant transactions, Raast strengthens financial inclusion, increases transaction transparency, and reduces dependence on cash handling. Integrating Raast P2M at Shell fuel stations introduces digital payments into everyday spending behavior, encouraging wider public adoption and supporting a more formalized and efficient economy.

Executives from both Bank Alfalah and Shell Pakistan highlight that the collaboration reflects a joint commitment to accelerating digital payment penetration and fostering modern financial convenience for consumers. Fuel stations remain a core part of daily commerce, and introducing QR-powered payments in such high-traffic environments represents a powerful step toward expanding the digital economy. It further aligns with national goals to advance secure and frictionless digital banking services accessible to all segments of society.

The rollout also emphasizes Pakistan’s ongoing transition from cash-heavy transactions to a digital-first payment culture. As customers increasingly adopt mobile-based financial services, real-time QR payments are emerging as a preferred method for fast, secure, and traceable transactions. QR technology eliminates the need for specialized hardware, making it scalable and cost-effective for merchants while offering customers simplicity and peace of mind.

Industry experts note that the shift to QR-based fuel payments presents additional benefits including reduced cash management overhead for fuel stations, enhanced transaction security, and minimized queuing time for customers. The system also promotes compliance, digital recordkeeping, and reduced cash-handling risks, while providing merchants with real-time settlement through Raast rails.

As the initial phase launches across 42 Shell COCO locations, subsequent phases are expected to expand QR acceptance further across Shell’s wider network. The modernization of payment infrastructure in retail energy distribution demonstrates the increasing pace of fintech adoption in Pakistan and underscores the cooperative role of financial institutions, international brands, and regulatory frameworks in shaping digital financial behavior.

The Bank Alfalah and Shell Pakistan QR deployment symbolizes a broader commitment to strengthening digital payment options nationwide. It stands as a strong example of industry-driven innovation aligned with national financial digitization objectives and reflects a continued march toward accessible, inclusive, and tech-forward financial services.
