Askari Bank Launches Pakistan First Smart Society App to Create Cashless Hyperlocal Economies

Askari Bank has officially introduced Pakistan’s first Smart Society App, marking a significant milestone in the digital transformation of residential living within the country. Launched initially in DHA Islamabad, this innovative digital platform is designed to convert traditional residential communities into fully cashless hyperlocal economies. By utilizing an interactive mobile app interface customized specifically for the needs of residents, the bank is facilitating a shift toward a more convenient and technologically advanced lifestyle. This initiative represents a strategic pivot for the financial institution, moving away from conventional banking products toward an integrated lifestyle ecosystem that seamlessly blends financial services with daily community activities.

The Smart Society App provides residents of DHA Islamabad with the tools to manage their financial and community interactions through secure digital channels. The application supports a wide range of digital payments, including utility bills, school fees, society dues, and various retail purchases. Beyond simple transactions, the platform has established hyperlocal marketplaces where residents and local merchants can buy, sell, and interact digitally within their own neighborhoods. This approach is specifically aimed at bringing informal and cash heavy micro economies into the formal financial system, thereby unlocking new transaction flows and creating fresh revenue opportunities for small business owners within these societies.

The functionality of the platform extends far beyond basic financial transactions to encompass a broader community experience. It integrates various lifestyle and engagement features such as the booking of community facilities, access to local announcements, and real-time updates including weather forecasts. By embedding financial services directly into these everyday activities, the Smart Society App positions itself as the primary interface for residents. In this model, banking is no longer viewed as a standalone or cumbersome function but is instead woven into the fabric of community interaction and daily consumption, making the process of payment almost invisible and highly efficient.

To support this cashless ecosystem on the ground, the initiative includes the widespread deployment of QR codes and Point of Sale machines at various merchant locations throughout the community. This physical infrastructure ensures that residents can enjoy seamless and convenient digital payments at every touchpoint of their daily routine. Ali Naqvi, the Chief Digital Officer of Askari Bank, noted that the Smart Society App represents a pivotal shift from merely providing digital products to owning the entire ecosystem where daily economic activity occurs. He emphasized that the bank is moving closer to the customer by being present not just in a branch or a standard app, but within the actual community where life happens.

Following the pilot phase in DHA Islamabad, Askari Bank has plans to scale the Smart Society App across numerous housing societies nationwide. The bank views this project as a blueprint for the future of digital living in Pakistan and a cornerstone of its long term digital transformation strategy. By fostering synergy between futuristic banking and the practical needs of common residents, the project aims to set a new standard for urban living. As the rollout continues, the bank expects to see a significant reduction in cash dependency within these societies, contributing to the broader national goal of financial documentation and digital inclusion across the various provinces of Pakistan.
