Mastercard and Mashreq Partner to Launch Digital Bank in Pakistan

Mastercard has entered into a multi-year strategic collaboration with Mashreq to support its launch as a digital bank in Pakistan. The partnership, announced during a signing ceremony at Mashreq’s headquarters in Dubai, marks a significant step in expanding Pakistan’s digital banking landscape. This collaboration will focus on developing card portfolios for consumer, affluent, and business market segments, leveraging both Mashreq’s regional banking expertise and Mastercard’s global payments network.

Mashreq Pakistan has been granted a restricted license by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to commence pilot operations as a Digital Retail Bank. This move aligns with the government’s broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at enhancing financial inclusion and expanding access to financial services for underserved communities. With a rapidly growing digital economy, Pakistan presents a significant opportunity for innovative banking solutions that cater to evolving consumer needs.

The partnership is set to introduce a range of cutting-edge digital banking services that will streamline payments, enhance financial accessibility, and boost digital transactions across the country. Muhammad Hamayun Sajjad, CEO of Mashreq Pakistan, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating that the synergy between Mashreq and Mastercard will bring unmatched efficiency, security, and reliability to Pakistan’s digital banking ecosystem. He emphasized the bank’s ambition to simplify payments, drive innovation, and create financial empowerment through seamless and secure digital transactions.

Arslan Khan, Country Manager for Pakistan and Afghanistan at Mastercard, expressed Mastercard’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s digital banking evolution. He noted that the partnership with Mashreq would introduce market-leading digital propositions for both individual customers and businesses. By leveraging Mastercard’s global expertise and Mashreq’s strong regional presence, the collaboration aims to accelerate digital payment adoption and contribute meaningfully to financial inclusion in Pakistan.

The expansion of digital banking services in Pakistan has gained momentum in recent years, driven by increased smartphone penetration, a growing e-commerce sector, and regulatory support for fintech innovation. With digital payments becoming more prevalent, the partnership between Mastercard and Mashreq is expected to enhance transaction security and convenience, encouraging more consumers and businesses to shift toward cashless solutions.

This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Pakistan’s financial ecosystem by offering advanced banking solutions tailored to modern consumer needs. The introduction of innovative payment methods, digital cards, and real-time transaction capabilities will not only enhance user experience but also contribute to the broader goal of financial empowerment.

As part of its mission, Mastercard continues to work globally with banking and fintech partners to develop secure, simple, and accessible payment solutions. With operations in over 200 countries, the company remains focused on fostering sustainable digital economies. The collaboration with Mashreq is another step toward building a more inclusive financial landscape in Pakistan, enabling greater economic participation and driving sustainable growth through digital banking advancements.

With Mashreq set to launch its digital bank, the partnership with Mastercard signals a new era of banking in Pakistan—one that prioritizes convenience, security, and financial accessibility for businesses and individuals alike. As the digital financial ecosystem continues to evolve, initiatives like this will be instrumental in shaping the future of Pakistan’s banking sector.
