JazzCash has expanded its digital payment services in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) by enabling consumers of the AJK Electricity Department to pay their electricity bills through its mobile application and agent network. The service gives residents the option to complete payments from their mobile phones or visit a nearby JazzCash agent for over-the-counter transactions. The development is intended to reduce the need for consumers to travel to bank branches and designated collection centres, particularly in remote and mountainous areas where accessing financial services can require considerable time and effort. According to the announcement, the facility brings another essential public payment service onto JazzCash’s platform, adding to examination fee payments for the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) AJK that are already available through the service. The initiative connects a routine household expense with digital financial infrastructure, allowing residents to use established payment channels instead of relying exclusively on traditional in-person collection methods. For households that need to manage monthly electricity bills alongside other expenses, the availability of an additional payment option may make the process more convenient and accessible.
The new facility is particularly relevant for residents in parts of AJK where banking services and payment collection points may be located far from homes and commercial areas. Travelling to make a bill payment can involve transport expenses, time away from work and additional difficulties for people living in hilly or less accessible communities. Through the JazzCash application, eligible users can complete the transaction digitally, while those who prefer cash-based services can visit a JazzCash agent. This second option is significant because it allows people without smartphones or bank accounts to access the payment facility through the company’s agent network. The availability of both channels gives consumers flexibility according to their access to technology and their preferred method of payment. JazzCash already provides bill-payment services covering electricity, gas, water, internet and telephone bills, alongside other collection services. The addition of AJK electricity bills extends the range of public payments accessible through its platform. However, the announcement does not specify whether any special transaction charges apply to AJK electricity payments, so customers should check the applicable terms within the app or with an authorised agent before completing a transaction.
Arif Chaudhary, Head of Public Sector Partnerships at JazzCash, said the initiative was intended to make essential public services more accessible to families across AJK. He noted that paying electricity bills had often required residents to make lengthy journeys to bank branches or collection centres, while the integration provides options through both the mobile application and agent network. Muhammad Tayyab, Secretary of Energy and Water Resources for the Government of AJK, also welcomed the collaboration, highlighting its potential to save residents time and travel, particularly in locations where banking services are limited. The participation of the provincial government and a digital financial services provider illustrates how public-sector payment requirements can be connected with existing private-sector infrastructure. Rather than requiring every consumer to visit a specific collection point, the arrangement uses digital access and a distributed network of agents to provide alternative payment channels. The initiative also reflects the importance of collaboration between financial service providers and government departments when introducing digital options for routine services. Its practical impact will depend on service availability, successful transaction processing and how easily residents can obtain assistance when they encounter payment issues.
The launch forms part of JazzCash’s broader efforts to support digital financial inclusion and Pakistan’s transition towards a cashless economy. Moving public payments to digital channels can help reduce dependence on cash, provide transaction records and make payment services accessible beyond conventional banking locations. For electricity consumers, the ability to pay through a mobile application or an authorised agent can offer greater flexibility, while government departments may benefit from the use of established digital collection channels. JazzCash has said it will continue working with government institutions to digitise payments for services that citizens use regularly. The addition of AJK electricity bills is a practical step in that direction, particularly because utility payments are recurring obligations for households and businesses. The service also demonstrates that digital financial access does not depend solely on smartphone ownership: agent-based payments can provide an alternative for customers who are not comfortable with mobile applications or do not have access to them. Further expansion of such services could make public payments easier to complete across underserved communities. For now, the new facility gives AJK electricity consumers another route for settling their bills while extending the reach of JazzCash’s payment network into an important regional public-service category.
