Meezan Bank Limited has entered into a strategic partnership with DigiKhata to expand access to Shariah-compliant digital financing for e-commerce merchants across Pakistan. The collaboration is intended to help businesses access working capital through a digital financing process that covers customer onboarding, application submission, disbursement and settlement. According to Meezan Bank’s announcement, the partnership will use a Straight-Through Processing (STP) model to support an end-to-end digital journey, reducing the need for manual intervention across relevant stages of the financing process. The initiative targets merchants operating in Pakistan’s e-commerce sector, including businesses seeking financing to manage their operations and support growth.
The agreement was formally signed by Syed Tanveer Hussain, Chief Operating Officer of Wholesale Banking at Meezan Bank, and Adnan Aslam, Chief Executive Officer of DigiKhata. The partnership brings together Meezan Bank’s Islamic banking operations and DigiKhata’s role in the digital business ecosystem to make financing more accessible to eligible online merchants. Its focus on Shariah-compliant financing is relevant for businesses seeking funding options aligned with Islamic financial principles. However, the announcement did not disclose the specific financing products to be offered, the maximum financing amount available to individual merchants, applicable eligibility criteria or the expected launch date. Details about pricing, repayment periods and the scale of the initial rollout were also not provided.
A central feature of the collaboration is its use of Straight-Through Processing, a model designed to move applications through defined processing stages digitally, with reduced manual handling where possible. In the proposed journey, merchants can move from onboarding and application to disbursement and settlement through connected digital processes. Such an approach can help financial institutions manage application workflows more efficiently, although actual processing times and the extent of automation will depend on the partners’ implementation, verification requirements and financing policies. For e-commerce merchants, digital access to working capital can be relevant when they need to manage inventory purchases, fulfil customer orders, pay suppliers or address fluctuations in cash flow. The partnership announcement does not specify whether financing will be linked to sales data, transaction history or other merchant records, so the precise assessment and approval process remains to be confirmed.
Meezan Bank said the collaboration reflects its focus on small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) financial inclusion and digital financial services. Access to financing remains an important consideration for smaller businesses, which may need additional capital to maintain stock, respond to demand and manage routine operating expenses. E-commerce merchants can face particular cash-flow pressures when payments, supplier obligations and inventory requirements do not align. Digital financing channels may provide another route for eligible businesses to apply for funding without relying entirely on conventional, paper-heavy processes. Nevertheless, access will depend on the financing arrangements and eligibility conditions established by the partners, which have not yet been publicly detailed.
The partnership also reflects the continued use of digital platforms to connect financial institutions with businesses seeking financing. By combining Meezan Bank’s banking services with DigiKhata’s digital platform, the initiative aims to make Shariah-compliant financing available through a more connected process for e-commerce merchants in Pakistan. The practical impact will depend on the products introduced, the number of merchants served and how efficiently applications can be processed from submission through settlement. Further information on rollout timelines, financing limits and merchant onboarding is expected to clarify how the arrangement will operate in practice. For now, the announcement establishes the two organisations’ intention to expand digital financing access for eligible online businesses while supporting the wider use of technology in Pakistan’s SME and e-commerce sectors.
