The Government of Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing a cashless economy and expanding digital financial inclusion across the country. Minister of State for Railways and Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani said the government is focused on increasing the use of digital payments to improve transparency, convenience and formal documentation of economic activity.
The minister made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation from JS Bank and Zindigi, where both sides discussed strategies for expanding digital financial services and supporting the country’s transition toward a technology-enabled economy. The government highlighted the importance of digital payment systems in making financial transactions more efficient while encouraging greater participation in the formal financial ecosystem.
The government is also focusing on creating an environment where businesses and consumers can increasingly shift from cash-based transactions toward digital alternatives. According to the minister, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally overseeing the cashless economy drive, with progress being made over the past year on initiatives aimed at promoting digital payments and formalising economic activity.
The meeting also emphasised the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in expanding digital financial services. JS Bank and Zindigi discussed opportunities to support the government’s digital finance agenda through wider adoption of cashless solutions, improved digital infrastructure and increased access to technology-driven financial services.
The renewed focus on digital payments comes as Pakistan continues to develop its digital financial ecosystem. Greater adoption of cashless transactions could help improve payment efficiency, expand financial access and support the documentation of economic activity, while partnerships between financial institutions and the government remain important for scaling digital financial services nationwide.
