US Sanctions Iran-Linked Crypto Exchanges and Shadow Banking Networks

The United States has announced sanctions targeting Iran-linked cryptocurrency exchanges and shadow banking networks, alleging that the entities and individuals involved were used to move and launder billions of dollars. The measures announced by the US Treasury Department represent another step in Washington’s campaign to restrict Iran’s access to international financial channels. The action covers digital asset exchanges as well as a wider network of entities and individuals associated with Iran’s shadow banking system.

The US Treasury designated two digital asset exchanges and an Iranian individual who operates a network of front companies, alleging that they facilitated illicit cryptocurrency activity and sanctions evasion. According to the US authorities, Iranian actors used digital currency exchange platforms to transfer large volumes of assets and relied on front companies to conceal the origins of funds. The Treasury alleged that proceeds were laundered for the benefit of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and individuals connected to the Iranian regime.

In a separate action, the US Treasury designated 35 entities and individuals connected to what it described as Iran’s shadow banking network. The department said these networks enabled the movement of hundreds of millions of dollars outside conventional financial channels. The measures reflect Washington’s broader focus on financial networks that it says allow Iran to maintain access to international financial systems despite existing sanctions.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iran’s reliance on digital assets and shadow banking networks demonstrated the importance of continuing financial pressure against the country. The US government said it would continue targeting networks that facilitate financial activity for Iran, including those using cryptocurrency and other alternative financial mechanisms. The latest sanctions therefore highlight the increasing role of digital assets in international financial enforcement and sanctions-related investigations.

The measures also underline the growing regulatory scrutiny facing cryptocurrency exchanges and digital asset networks when they are alleged to facilitate illicit financial activity. As governments around the world continue developing frameworks for virtual assets, authorities are increasingly focused on transaction monitoring, sanctions compliance, anti-money laundering controls and the identification of entities attempting to operate outside established financial systems. The US action against Iran-linked crypto exchanges and shadow banking networks demonstrates how digital assets have become part of broader international financial enforcement efforts.
